Short answer: VA coverage is not automatic. Wegovy and Zepbound are non-formulary in the VA system and require the applicable criteria and prior approval. CHAMPVA does not cover GLP-1 drugs when prescribed only for weight loss, although it covers specific products for certain FDA-approved diagnoses. TRICARE has its own prior-authorization rules.

Start with the right benefit
| Benefit | What the current rule means | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| VA health care | Coverage can be available when the patient meets VA criteria; Wegovy and Zepbound are non-formulary and need approval. | Ask the VA prescriber which current Criteria for Use applies and whether a non-formulary request was submitted. |
| CHAMPVA | Not covered for weight loss alone. Coverage is diagnosis-specific for listed FDA-approved uses. | Confirm the diagnosis and product against the current CHAMPVA medication notice. |
| TRICARE | Weight-loss medications may be covered, but prior authorization and plan rules apply. | Use the TRICARE formulary tool and have the prescriber submit the required form. |
What CHAMPVA covers
VA states that CHAMPVA does not cover GLP-1 medication prescribed for weight loss. Its current notice lists Mounjaro, Ozempic, Rybelsus, Trulicity, and Victoza for type 2 diabetes; Zepbound for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea verified by a recent sleep study; and Wegovy for specified cardiovascular or liver indications. Those are diagnosis-based exceptions, not general obesity coverage.
How VA approval usually works
- Discuss eligibility and contraindications with a VA clinician.
- Ask which current VA Criteria for Use document applies to the requested drug.
- Confirm whether required lifestyle treatment, measurements, or comorbidity documentation is in the chart.
- Have the clinician submit the non-formulary request when required.
- If denied, request the exact reason and address the missing criterion or use the available review process.
Do not assume that a retail prescription or another insurer's approval transfers to the VA benefit.

Try the BMI Calculator →What to do after a denial
Get the denial reason in writing. A denial may reflect an excluded indication, an unmet clinical criterion, missing documentation, or use of the wrong benefit. Ask the prescriber and pharmacy team whether corrected documentation, a different FDA-approved indication, or an appeal is appropriate. Do not buy an unapproved product marketed as “the same as” an FDA-approved GLP-1 without discussing the safety and legal differences with a clinician.
Frequently asked questions
Does the VA cover Wegovy for weight loss?
It may, but Wegovy is non-formulary and requires the applicable VA criteria and prior approval; coverage is not automatic.
Does CHAMPVA cover GLP-1 drugs for weight loss?
No. VA states that CHAMPVA does not cover GLP-1 medications prescribed for weight loss alone.
Can CHAMPVA cover Zepbound?
CHAMPVA lists Zepbound coverage for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea verified by a sleep study within the prior 12 months, not for weight loss alone.
Does TRICARE cover weight-loss medication?
TRICARE says weight-loss medications may be covered when plan requirements and prior authorization are met.
What should I do if coverage is denied?
Ask for the exact denial reason, compare it with the current criteria, and work with the prescriber on missing documentation, a review, or an appropriate alternative.
