How To Inject Wegovy?

Wegovy is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) once per week using a single-dose prefilled pen. Remove the pen cap, place the yellow base flat against your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, press and hold the button until you hear two clicks, then remove the pen after the second click.

Step-by-Step Wegovy Injection Process

Wash your hands with soap and water. Remove the Wegovy pen from the refrigerator and allow it to warm to room temperature for approximately 30 minutes. Do not try to warm it by using a microwave, hot water, or direct sunlight. Check the expiration date on the pen and inspect the solution through the viewing window. The liquid should be clear and colorless. Do not use the pen if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or contains particles.

When you are ready, pull off the pen cap. You will not see the needle because it is hidden inside the yellow base of the pen. Select your injection site: the lower abdomen (at least two inches away from the navel), the front of the thigh, or the back of the upper arm. Clean the site with an alcohol swab and allow it to air dry.

Place the yellow base of the pen flat and firmly against your skin. Press the injection button with your thumb. You will hear a first click, which signals that the injection has started. Continue holding the pen in place. A yellow bar will begin to move in the viewing window. When you hear the second click and the yellow bar stops moving, the injection is complete. This process takes approximately 5 to 10 seconds. Remove the pen from your skin. The needle will automatically retract into the pen. Do not rub the injection site.

Key Differences Between Wegovy and Ozempic Pens

Although both contain semaglutide, the Wegovy pen and the Ozempic pen work differently. Wegovy uses a single-dose prefilled autoinjector with a hidden needle that requires no needle attachment, no flow check, and no dose dialing. Each pen contains exactly one dose and is discarded after use. Ozempic is a multi-dose pen that requires you to attach a needle, perform a flow check, and dial your dose. If you are switching between these medications, make sure you understand the specific pen instructions for the product you are using.

Choosing and Rotating Injection Sites

Rotate your injection site with each weekly dose to prevent skin irritation and lipodystrophy. Avoid injecting into areas with scars, stretch marks, bruises, or tender spots. You can alternate between the abdomen, thigh, and upper arm, or shift the location within the same body region each week. Keep at least one inch between consecutive injection locations. Self-injection into the upper arm can be difficult to do alone, so use the abdomen or thigh if you are injecting without assistance.

What to Consider

Each Wegovy pen is for one-time use only. Dispose of it in a sharps container after use, even though the needle retracts automatically. Never attempt to reuse a pen or share a pen with another person. If the viewing window does not show a completed injection (yellow bar not fully visible), you may not have received the full dose. Do not attempt a second injection. Contact your prescribing physician for guidance. If you have a known allergy to latex, be aware that the pen cap may contain natural rubber latex.

Do I need to pinch my skin when using the Wegovy pen?

No. The Wegovy autoinjector is designed to deliver the medication at the correct depth when pressed flat against the skin. Pinching is not required and is not recommended with this pen design. Simply place the yellow base firmly against the skin and press the button.

What if I remove the Wegovy pen too early?

If you remove the pen before hearing the second click, you may not have received the full dose. Check the viewing window. If the yellow bar has not stopped moving, the injection was incomplete. Do not attempt to re-inject with the same pen. Contact your prescribing physician to determine whether you need a replacement dose.

Can I travel with my Wegovy pens?

Yes. Keep the pens in an insulated travel case with ice packs to maintain refrigeration. Wegovy can be stored at room temperature (up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) for up to 28 days if needed. Carry your pens in your carry-on luggage when flying, and bring a copy of your prescription in case of security questions.

Why does the Wegovy pen have different dose strengths?

Wegovy follows a five-step dose escalation schedule: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg. Each dose level uses a different pen. Your physician prescribes increasing strengths over 16 to 20 weeks to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Each pen delivers its single fixed dose automatically.
