Ozempic and Mounjaro are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are genuinely different medications, not two versions of one drug. They share one hormone target and differ on another, and that difference shows up in the results. Here is how they actually compare.

Quick Answer

Ozempic and Mounjaro are different drugs. Ozempic is semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk, and acts on one hormone receptor (GLP-1). Mounjaro is tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly, and acts on two (GLP-1 and GIP). Both are once-weekly injections approved for type 2 diabetes, but in head-to-head trials tirzepatide produced greater blood sugar control and more weight loss. They have similar, mostly digestive side effects. Which is "better" depends on your goals, tolerance, cost, and what your clinician recommends.

Is Ozempic the Same as Mounjaro?

No. They are different molecules from different manufacturers. The point of overlap is that both act on the GLP-1 receptor. The difference is that Mounjaro also acts on a second receptor, GIP, making it a dual agonist, while Ozempic is a single-pathway GLP-1 agonist.

So they are related in their shared GLP-1 action but distinct in their overall mechanism, which is why their effects differ.

What Is the Difference Between Ozempic and Mounjaro?

Mechanism. Ozempic (semaglutide) activates one receptor, GLP-1. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) activates two, GLP-1 and GIP. The dual action is the main reason tirzepatide tends to be more potent.

Manufacturer. Ozempic is from Novo Nordisk; Mounjaro is from Eli Lilly.

Approved use. Both are approved for type 2 diabetes. Ozempic additionally carries an approval to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with type 2 diabetes and established heart disease. For weight management specifically, the brands are Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), not Ozempic or Mounjaro.

Results. In head-to-head diabetes trials and in obesity comparisons, tirzepatide generally produced greater A1C reduction and more weight loss than semaglutide.

Does Mounjaro Work Better Than Ozempic?

On the measures studied, tirzepatide has the edge. In a head-to-head diabetes trial (SURPASS-2), tirzepatide produced greater blood sugar reduction and more weight loss than semaglutide. In the obesity comparison (SURMOUNT-5), tirzepatide produced about 20.2% average body weight loss versus about 13.7% for semaglutide over 72 weeks.

That does not make Ozempic a poor choice. Semaglutide has a strong track record and an additional cardiovascular approval in diabetes with heart disease. "Better" depends on whether you prioritize maximum potency, a particular approval, tolerance, or cost.

Do They Have the Same Side Effects?

The profiles are similar. Both commonly cause nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and reduced appetite, usually worst during dose increases and easing over time. Neither is clearly gentler across the board, and tolerance varies by person. Slow titration, smaller meals, hydration, and adequate protein help on either drug.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ozempic the same as Mounjaro?

No. They are different drugs. Ozempic is semaglutide (one receptor, GLP-1); Mounjaro is tirzepatide (two receptors, GLP-1 and GIP).

What is the difference between Ozempic and Mounjaro?

Mechanism and maker. Mounjaro adds a second receptor target (GIP) and tends to be more potent. They come from different manufacturers.

Does Mounjaro work better than Ozempic?

In head-to-head trials, tirzepatide produced greater blood sugar control and more weight loss. "Better" still depends on your goals, tolerance, and cost.

Is Mounjaro like Ozempic?

They share GLP-1 action, so they are related, but Mounjaro's dual mechanism makes it distinct and generally more potent.

Does Mounjaro have fewer side effects than Ozempic?

The profiles are similar, dominated by GI symptoms. Neither is clearly gentler, and individual tolerance varies.

Is Ozempic or Mounjaro better for weight loss?

Tirzepatide showed more weight loss in trials, but for weight management the on-label brands are Wegovy and Zepbound rather than Ozempic and Mounjaro.

Can I switch between them?

A switch is a clinician decision, often guided by response, tolerance, and coverage, with titration restarted as needed.

Which is cheaper?

Pricing and coverage vary by plan, pharmacy, and over time. Compare current costs for each.
